The School of Foreign Languages always views talents cultivation as the most important work. Not only does the School emphasize the cultivation of research- and application-oriented talents of high quality with a Chinese mind and global vision, but it also attaches great importance to bolstering the students’ overall foreign language proficiency and literacy, and thus it keeps launching and accelerating various teaching reforms to pursue a constant improvement of teaching quality.

By initiating the hierarchical research-based teaching model involving multiple courses, the Department of College Foreign Languages has established a comprehensive teaching standard evaluation system, a solid course resources pool and a teaching platform on the university intranet. College English has been made into a new research-based course with the combination of teachers’ illustration and students’ research and discussion specific to different unit topics. While catering to the needs of nurturing talents from different majors and of various levels, the Department concentrates on cultivating students’ integrated language application ability, cultural literacy, abilities of autonomous learning, academic research, innovation and cross-cultural communication to prepare them in language and culture for studying abroad and participation in international academic exchanges. In order to serve our new talent-training mode and meet internationalized education demand, create an academic English communication environment on campus, cultivate students' academic research ability, the Foreign Language Division for Postgraduates actively carries out reforms in curriculum, teaching syllabus, teaching mode and teaching materials. Consequently the Division has achieved good results in teaching experiment.

With the integration of such courses as trade & economics, law, sci-tech media, the English and Japanese programs have cast away the traditional one-fold training mode for skilled talents. The programs, which have inherited SEU excellence in teaching and its disciplinary advantages, gears itself to the social needs by placing emphasis on training students’ practical English language skills and on broadening their scope of knowledge, offering courses, apart from various English ones—on economics, trade, law and engineering translation. In the Department, courses are taught in a smaller class, and in the first two years of the program, students are to lay a solid foundation of the English language, and practical skills in the third and fourth years, courses of linguistics, literature and culture are taught along with career-oriented courses. All these measures contribute to highlighting the features of application-oriented talents cultivation.

The School is committed to cultivating talents willing to take responsibilities, conscious of showing gratitude, ready to share, and well-versed in both Chinese and foreign languages and culture. It ranks among the best universities in China in terms of the pass rate and excellence rate of its English majors in TEM-4 and TEM-8 and of Japanese majors in Level 1 Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Students have scored outstanding achievements in the national speech contest, the simulated United Nations and other activities. The School provides its students with chances to study in America, England, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan every semester, which helps to expand their vision and broaden their horizon. The School graduates, mainly employed in finance sections, educational institutions, the United Nations and the media organizations, are greatly welcomed by their employers.
