I.Course Introduction:

This course covers the three main parts: a) Technical translation history and theory; b) obstacles to technical translation and handling approaches; c) machine translation (MT) and computer-aided translation (CAT), with its focus upon dominant modern translation theories, technical translation research and practice, including MT & CAT development and application. It is designed to help students develop their research interest in technical translation, upgrade their translation strategies and grasp the basic skills for translation software operation.

XII.Brief Introduction of Chief lecturer:

Professor of English and MA supervisor in the Department of Foreign Languages; male, born in 1957. From 1988 to 1990, he studied in Xi’an Jiaotong University as a postgraduate majoring in linguistics and applied linguistics. His research interests include ESP research, EST translation, machine translation & computer-aided translation, etc. In recent years, he has published over 60 research papers in such journals as Foreign Languages Teaching and Research, Chinese Translators Journal, Chinese Science & Technology Translators Journal, Chinese Education Theory and Practice, Foreign Languages and Translation, Journal of Southeast University and so on or in proceedings. He has also coauthored 15 books. Among his representative publications are: ‘A Probe into the Development of EST’, ‘Semantic Extension in Sci-Tech Translation’, ‘On EST Rhetoric’, ‘On Translating English Cataphoric Pronouns’, ‘Transferred Negation and Its Semantic & Pragmatic Translation’, ‘On the Five Hypotheses of Second Language Acquisition Theory’, ‘Advanced English’, etc. Over the past few years, he has won 2 teaching awards from the province and the university.
