I.Course Introduction
This course mainly introduces the basic concepts of cross-cultural communication, such as face theory, politeness principle, the relation between text and culture value, and the culture differences in oral and written language, and explains those concepts in terms of theories. By studying the typical cases drawn from different culture backgrounds, the course demonstrates the language discrimination, culture expectation reflected in social and political issues, and help students train themselves in culture attitude, culture consciousness, language reform and language policy. Students will be assessed by a course paper.
II.Lecturer
Professor Farzad Sharifian, gentleman, Phd, post-Dr.ial, is one of the pioneers of Cultural Linguistics. Professor Farzad Sharifian is a linguist with a multidisciplinary background in cognitive science, anthropology and education. He has developed a theoretical model of cultural conceptualisations and language, which draws on and expands the analytical tools and theoretical advancements in several disciplines, including cognitive linguistics, cognitive anthropology, anthropological linguistics, distributed cognition, complexity science, and cognitive psychology.
