Professor Farzad Sharifian

Biography

Professor FarzadSharifian is a linguist with a multidisciplinary background in cognitivescience, anthropology and education. He is one of the pioneers of Cultural Linguistics. He has developed a theoretical model of culturalconceptualisations and language, which draws on and expands the analyticaltools and theoretical advancements in several disciplines, including cognitivelinguistics, cognitive anthropology, anthropological linguistics, distributedcognition, complexity science, and cognitive psychology. This theoretical modeland its applications in the areas of intercultural communication, cross-culturalpragmatics, second language learning, and political discourse analysis are thesubject of Prof Sharifian’s monograph entitled Cultural conceptualisations and Language(John Benjamins, 2011).

ProfessorSharifian is the founder of English as an International Language within the School of Languages,Cultures, and Linguistics, MonashUniversity. He is theEditor, (with Professor Ning Yu, Oklahoma University) of Cognitive Linguistic Studies inCultural Contexts, book series,John Benjamins [flyer for this book series]. In 2011, he will chair the 17th conference of the InternationalAssociation of World Englishes (IAWE) at MonashUniversity (November,23-25, 2011). [flyer for this conference]

ProfessorSharifian has received multiple awards for his research, teaching, andpostgraduate supervision, including EdithCowanUniversity'sResearch Medal and Award for Excellence in Early Career Research of the Year,Faculty of Arts, MonashUniversity (2008). He wasa Post-Doctoral Fellow of the Australian Research Council at the University of Western Australia before joining MonashUniversityin 2005.
