On the morning of June 8, 2016, upon the invitation of the School of Foreign Languages, Dr. Peter De Costa from Michigan State University gave a lecture entitled “An Author’s and Reviewer’s Perspective on Publishing in SSCI Journals.” Dean Chen Meihua, Deputy Dean Ma Dongmei and Deputy Dean Zhu Shanhua attended the lecture together with teachers and students from the School of Foreign Languages.

Dr. De Costa drew on his own experiences as both an author and a reviewer to summarize the rules and suggestions for the submission of articles to SSCI journals. Dr. De Costa suggests that an author should get familiar with the target journals by reading through the articles published in them in the past five to ten years. The author should also choose and rank the most appropriate three journals in his research area and study the editorial board membership. It is recommended to cite some of the articles from these prospective journals. Several articles on the same topic may be composed at the same time and submitted at intervals.

Dr. De Costa stressed the importance of building up one’s professional network through attending international conferences and other academic activities in the promotion of academic exchange and cooperation.

Dr. De Costa made case studies about reviewers’ comments on submissions and the authors’ responses. He also gave specific answers to the questions from the audience about the details of writing articles and submitting them to SSCI journals.

The lecture was a great success.
