“Foreign Language Planning under the Belt and Road Initiative” was successfully held at 2 p.m on December 29, 2015, in SFL (School of Foreign Languages), SEU (SoutheastUniversity). This salon was sponsored by Social Sciences Department of SEU and organized by SFL. Prof. Chen Meihua, dean of SFL and director of RCAPLP (ResearchCenter for Asia-Pacific Language Policies) of SEU, chaired this academic event. Prof. Shen Qi from Institute of Language Study, Shanghai International Studies University and Prof. Dong Xiaobo from School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing Normal University shared their research achievements with teachers and students present.
As an outstanding interdisciplinary scholar, Prof. Dong Xiaobo has not only made remarkable achievements in legal English studies, but also made himself well known in the emerging areas like legal language planning. In his speech entitled “Language Planning in China’s Legal Field”, Prof. Dong claimed that, as law is closely related to language, legal language should be scientifically planned to serve for the Belt and Road Initiative. He also expounded on how to apply law to standardizing daily language use by listing some legal translation problems.
Prof. Shen Qi, the deputy director of Research Center of Foreign Language Strategies, China, delivered a speech called “B&R Foreign Language Planning and Research: A Trans-disciplinary Paradigm”. In his speech, Prof. Shen expounded on the new mission of foreign language discipline under the national strategy of B&R, and proposed a change in the paradigm transformation and introduced the task, methods and approaches of trans-disciplinary research in connection with the possible topics of foreign language research under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Teachers from RCAPLP actively participated in the Q & A session after the speech, asking questions and delivered their opinions. This salon has brought new ideas, new views and new thoughts in foreign language planning and research.
