On May 18th, 2016, Professor Zhang Zhiguo from Shanghai Maritime University was invited to the School of Foreign Languages, SEU, to deliver a lecture about language management. Professor Chen Meihua, Dean of Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center of Jiangsu Research Center of International Issues, hosted the lecture. Deputy Dean Ma Dongmei, Deputy Dean Zhu Shanhua, research fellows and postgraduate students of the Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center attended the lecture.
Professor Zhang introduced the definition, characteristics, feasibility and necessity of language management. He compared the three terms of language management, language planning and language policy, and analyzed the definition, scope and characteristics of language management by presenting arguments from such experts as Jernudd, Neustupny, Nekvapil and Spolsky. Research fellows and students learned more from the lecture about individual language management, organizational language management, the process and fields of language management and deepened the understanding of the necessity and importance of language management. The lecture was so thought-provoking that a heated discussion was carried out between Professor Zhang and research fellows and students about the relationship between language creation and language management, the main body of language management, and language ecology.
