The Department of English originated in the English course set up by Sanjiang Normal College in 1903, which now possesses two undergraduate programs, two Master’s programs, and PhD programs and postdoctoral programs in major research areas in linguistics.
The Bachelor’s in English aims to develop talents with proficient English language skills, critical thinking and innovation, global vision, competitiveness, and a deep sense of humanity. In 2022, the Department of English launched a new undergraduate program offering a dual bachelor’s degree in English Language & Literature and Information Engineering. The program represents the university’s first initiative in cultivating talents to meet the need of constructing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era and developing emerging strategic industries, such as new-information technology.
The Department of English offers MA programs in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and Translation & Interpreting. The Master’s program of Translation and Interpreting is the first Sino-Foreign joint MA program in Translation & Interpreting by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE) . The Department also offers PhD programs and postdoctoral programs in major research areas including Language Education and Learning Science, Foreign Literature, Translation Studies, Language Policies as well as Country and Area Studies.
The Department of English now has 28 teaching staff, including 10 professors, 14 associate professors, and 4 assistant professors, among whom 24 are PhD holders, accounting for 85.7 percent of all faculty members. In the past five years, ours faculties, as project directors, have undertaken 14 social science projects sponsored by the National Social Science Foundation of China. In addition, they have published over 60 academic essays indexed by CSSCI and SSCI.
