The 2017 Annual Conference on Non-major Foreign Language Teaching was held at the Lecture Hall of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) on Jiulonghu Campus on September 6. Zhu Shanhua, Deputy Dean of SFL, hosted the conference. It consisted of two main sessions: keynote speeches in the morning and group discussions in the afternoon. The conference covered a wide range of latest topics such as the goal and task of college English teaching in the context of the National ‘Double First-rate’ Plan”, the development of online courses and micro lectures, the implementation and strategies of learner-centered teaching, the evaluation of college English teaching to promote curricular development” and “effective assessment of teaching. Enlightening keynote speeches were delivered by Dr. Li Xiaoxiang, director of the Professors’ Committee of SFL, Dr. Liu Xuming, an expert from the Supervising Committee of Teaching Affairs’ Office, Dr. Hou Yan, a representative of senior teachers, Dr. Hou Jixuan and Dr. Chen Wenxue, representatives of young teachers from the Department of Physics and SFL respectively.
Group discussions in the afternoon addressed particular issues in each department and the results were reported to the conference. Dr. Ma Qiang, secretary of the Committee of the Communist Party of SFL, and Dr. Chen Meihua, Dean of SFL, acknowledged the success of the conference. Dr. Ma emphasized the importance of enhancing the ethical wellbeing of faculty. Dr. Chen demanded that teaching and research be further developed and optimized in the context of the National “Double First-rate” Plan and faculty make further efforts to publish high standard research papers.
