Lecture on “Sociolinguistic Life and Language Identity in Language Planning”

On the afternoon of January 3rd, 2020, Professor Zhou Minglang from the University of Maryland was invited by Asia-pacific Language Policy Research Center to give a lecture entitled “Sociolinguistic Life and Language Identity in Language Planning” at the School of Foreign Languages of Southeast University. After the lecture, he had an in-depth discussion with participants including teachers and graduate students in first grade.

Professor Zhou, Ph.D. in linguistics from Michigan State University, is an associate professor and program director in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University of Maryland. His research interest includes macro-sociology of language, language and ethnicity, bilingual education, and Chinese as a second language.

Professor Zhou reviewed Sociolinguistic Life and Language Identity in literature and redefined the concepts of them. He introduced sociolinguistic life in detail from Micro-, Meso-, and Macro aspects and gave some related examples respectively.

Participants have benefited a lot from the lecture which provides new ideas for their research direction in future.
