At 8 pm on June 22, 2020, Professor Xuesong (Andy) Gao, co-editor of the SSCI Journal System and doctoral supervisor of the University of New South Wales, Australia, was invited by the School of Foreign Languages of Southeast University and the Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center to present an online lecture via Tencent Conference on the theme of Methods and Approaches in Language Policy Research. This lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Han Yawen and more than 300 teachers and students at home and abroad participated.
Xuesong Gao is an associate professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Education, the University of New South Wales in Australia, and a visiting professor at Southeast University as well. He is also a highly cited scholar in linguistics at Elsevier Greater China, and also chairman of the International Union of Young Applied Linguists. His research interests include international students’ educational experiences, language learner autonomy, language education policy, and language teacher education.
In this lecture, Professor Gao first explained some common terms in the field of language policy research. Then he demonstrated different approaches in terms of what, when, why, who and how at different levels and introduced some new waves of language policy research. Later he recommended some relevant studies, books and resources for the audience.
The lecture lasted about 90 minutes. Professor Gao delivered the whole lecture with excellent explanation and a witty style. In the Q&A section, the participants actively raised many questions about the research hotspots, methods, and thesis submissionof language policy research. Prof. Gao answered them one by one and put forward his own suggestions and opinions meticulously. The whole lecture was rich in content. The participants benefited a lot and gained a further understanding of the field of language policy research, especially its methods and approaches.
