At 7:30 pm on October 26, 2020, Dr. Liddicoat, Professor in the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick and Adjunct Professor in the Justice and Society at the University of South Australia, was invited by the School of Foreign Languages of Southeast University and the Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center to hold an online lecture on the theme of “micro-level language policy and planning: level, agency and structure”.

Dr. Liddicoat is Professor in the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick and Adjunct Professor in the Justice and Society at the University of South Australia. He is currently co-convenor of the AILA Research Network Intercultural mediation in language and culture teaching and learning and Executive Editor of Current Issues in Language Planning. His research focuses on Intercultural Education, Language Education, Language Planning and Policy.

While research on language policy and language planning has traditionally focused on the macro level, in recent years, scholars in the field have increasingly focused on actors of the meso and micro levels, and how they influence decision-making and implementation of language policy and planning. This lecture focuses on the meso and micro level of language policy and planning, in particular on issues that arise in the decision-making process of language policy in local context. It offers a detailed explanation on the agency of language policy actors at local level and the structure that influences their decision-making process. In his lecture, Professor Liddicoat first introduced different stages of LPP research, then analyzed three perspectives of LPP research, namely, LPP in text, LPP in discourse, and LPP in practice. Then he made a clearly definition of the term “agent”. After that, he discussed agents of three different levels, namely, macro-level, meso-level and micro-level.

The impressive lecture lasted for an hour and a half. Through Professor Liddicoat clear, logical and detailed explanation, participants were greatly inspired. They actively exchanged ideas with him during the Q&A session and benefited a lot.
