Introduction

The history of the School of Foreign Languages can be traced back to 1902, when the university was founded and known as Sanjiang Normal College. At present,SFL offers 4 master programs: Japanese Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied linguistic, English Language and Literature, Translation and Interpreting. Among them, Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) is a dual degree program jointly run by Southeast University and Monash University (Australia).

Objectives

The objectives of MTI are to provide a joint training program based on the advantages of both sides in Translation and Interpreting. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to engage in bi-directional translation and interpreting between Chinese and English, and cross cultural communication. Students will develop deep theoretical and practical knowledge in specific areas so that they will have the solid foundation to either further their study or find a job in the profession. Normally, the students are expected to graduate in 2 or 2.5 years.

Thesis Requirements

(1) Literature Reading (for reference only, the same below) Students are required to read at least 30 literatures on topics related to their thesis and research direction and to write a literature review.

(2) Thesis Writing In addition to compliance with the provisions of school, thesis must be written in a systematic and complete manner, presenting clear concepts, correct arguments, realistic descriptions, concise writing structure, smooth and concise writing style, correct calculation, reliable data, and clear icons. The number of words for the thesis could be fixed according to the features of different thesis forms and the requirements of the topics chosen, ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 words.

(3) Thesis Evaluation The thesis should be based on students’ own translation practice and research. The findings presented in the thesis should have high academic value and positive impact on economic development of China. Students are required to conduct at least half a year research concerning the thesis topic.

(4) Internship Requirements At least half a year working as an intern in the profession concerning translation and interpreting, students are expected to submit translation practice of 150,000 words prior to applying for a Master’s Degree.
