SFL Holds 3rd Simulated International Conference

The 3rd Southeast University Simulated International Conference for non-English major postgraduates, a periodical inspection of the postgraduate English teaching reform, was held on Sipailou Campus in the afternoon of March 14, 2015.

Leading faculty members present were Prof. Chen Meihua, Dean of SFL (the School of Foreign Languages), Tang Dinghua, Deputy Party Sectary of SFL, and Zhu Shanhua, Vice Dean of SFL. Eight teams, respectively from the School of Architecture, the School of Information Science and Engineering, the School of Electronic Science and Endangering, the School of Integrated Circuits, the School of Biological Sciences and Medical Engineering, the School of Instrument Science Engineering, the School of Humanities as well as the Institution of Information Science and Technology, were selected from 26 teams in the preliminary and participated in the final contest.

Prof. Chen, in her opening speech, briefly reviewed the history of the postgraduate English teaching reform at SEU. Then she acknowledged and praised all the faculty members and students present. Moreover, she wished the Simulated Conference a complete success.

In the subsequent competition hosted by Chinese and overseas students, the eight teams, formally dressed, presented their simulated conference speeches. The speeches, based on the students’ own research, were presented in English--the prescribed conference language, with the aid of modern technology and under the procedures of international conferences. The simulated conference presentation, ranging from the topic of environmental pollution to job hunting and Ebola Virus, demonstrated the students’ English language skills, International communicative competence, humanistic qualities, psychological quality and team spirits.

At the end of the simulated conference, Prof. Tao Yun, Director of the Department of College Foreign Languages for Non-English Major Postgraduates of SFL, remarked on the competitors’ performance in terms of team work, language competence, procedures, presentation styles.

This competition was decided at 3 first prizes, 5 second prizes and several third prizes.  At  the closing ceremony, the leaders of SFL and the foreign judges presented the prizes for the competitors and excellent tutors.
