Jean-Marc Dewaele: Communicating emotions in a foreign language: the ultimate linguistic challenge

At 4:00 pm on April 14, 2021, Jean-Marc Dewaele, a professor of Birkbeck College, University of London, was invited by the School of Foreign Languages of Southeast University and the Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center to give an online lecture on the theme of “Communicating emotions in a foreign language: the ultimate linguistic challenge”. 

Jean-Marc Dewaele is a professor of Applied Linguistics and Communication at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. He does research on individual differences in psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, psychological and emotional variables in SLA and Multilingualism.

In the lecture, Professor Dewaele shared a study on emotion in SLA. Starting from the basic definition, Professor Dewaele deeply discussed the importance of emotion, the difficulties encountered by language learners in expressing emotion and the detachment effect of the foreign language in psychotherapy. Finally, some problems about communicating emotion were mentioned and Professor Dewaele gave his advice. The lecture lasted nearly two hours. The participants actively communicated with Professor Dewaele. He answered them patiently, and the atmosphere of the lecture was active. Professor Dewaele’s rich and valuable research experience benefited everyone a lot.
