I will frame this talk within the context of a large study I conducted on language proficiency outcomes of university-level students. I will present data from nearly 6000 students studying, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, who were assessed in reading, listening, speaking to show levels of proficiency during their course of study. The data will include students who are language majors as well as those who are not. In this part of the talk I will present background information from the students showing what indicators can be found to predict who will and who will not be successful language learners (including study abroad, learning language for fun, etc.) In the second part of the presentation, I will focus on issues that will address the difficulties that language learners have. And, finally, I will ask the question: what can we do about it? What behavioral factors can be found that are most likely to move the language learning process along in the most positive way possible.
